THE POSITION

With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the Sacramento region or have the ability to regularly report to a City of Sacramento physical worksite with little notice.

This position is part of the Enterprise Applications Division, which is responsible for developing, supporting, and maintaining the Human Resources Workers' Compensation System. It is also responsible for the system configuration, custom application development, report development, and day-to-day support. This technical position provides a wide range of development-related duties, system configuration, and end-user training. This position should work independently with minimal supervision on providing necessary system updates and enhancements in a timely matter.

IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a journey-level-professional classification populated with multiple incumbents. DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

UW Medicine IT Services (ITS) is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine. UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake Campus (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest Campus (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM), and Airlift Northwest (ALNW). In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children’s University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research, and Seattle Children’s). ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • You collaborate with the NACC Solutions Development Team on advanced level design and development of user interfaces for data search and access tools, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, and backend engineers.
  • You design scalable and maintainable front-end solutions, leveraging modern web technologies and frameworks to ensure high performance and responsiveness.
  • You develop reusable UI components and libraries to streamline the development process and maintain consistency across the application.
  • You implement advanced level data visualization techniques to present complex datasets in a clear and comprehensible manner, utilizing libraries such as D3.js or WebGL.
  • You design and implement user authentication, authorization, and access control mechanisms to safeguard sensitive user data and ensure compliance with security standards.
  • You perform the role of biomedical informatics consultant to researchers needing clinical data, including intake, problem definition, solution design, execution, and delivery of datasets in a compliant manner.
  • You collaborate in developing and delivering advanced level training for end users to effectively utilize developing resources.
  • You evaluate and provide expert advice and configuration support for integrating third party tools with existing systems.
  • You respond to advanced level technical design issues and questions for any and all matters specific to Research IT software, including operational, technical, and administrative elements that ensure the availability, reliability, security, and performance of the servers necessary to support the needs of the researchers.
  • You keep up-to-date on the latest UI/UX trends, best practices, and technology.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related field or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • 5+ years of overall experience to include the below.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in a healthcare or research IT setting.
  • Strong experience and the ability to guide other developers in at least 1 of the following:

o Front-end development and UI/UX design.

o Object-oriented or web language (e.g., Java, C#, TypeScript).

o Database query language (e.g., SQL, SPARQL).

o Scripting language (e.g., Python). - 2+ years of experience working with or have working knowledge of the following:

o Experience with data visualization libraries such as D3.js, WebGL, or Three.js, and proficiency in creating interactive charts, graphs, and dashboards.

o Cloud-native deployment and technologies.

o Experience working with and working knowledge of REST APIs.

o Container-based micro-service development (using Docker, Podman, and/or Kubernetes).

o Machine Learning (ML) or Natural Language Processing (NLP methods).

o 5+ years of experience in formal application/software development (source code version control, validation / deployment / maintenance).

o Proven track record of delivering high-quality UI/UX solutions for complex web applications, with a strong portfolio showcasing your design and development skills.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is an Information Technology deadline-driven work environment.
  • The individual in this position is expected to work normal daytime hours. KLA makes industrial systems that are indispensable for manufacturing of semiconductors. These systems involve complex hardware, firmware, software, and high-performance compute. The Sr. Systems Software Engineer position we are trying to fill is a core function of software engineering at KLA and has the responsibility for controlling various pieces of hardware that form our system as well as coordinating between them. As a senior member of the team a successful candidate will be expected to

  • Develop a deep understanding of the system and software architecture.
  • Mentoring junior team members. Although work will involve a small amount of low-level software development in the embedded space, most of the work will be done using Java at a higher level in the software stack. Successful candidates will have very strong software engineering skills as well as a passion for working with hardware (non-compute mechanical hardware). A software engineer in this position will have the following responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the design, development, testing, and roll out of software solutions that enhance the capabilities of the KLA inspection machines.
  • Possess good communication skills to work with several hardware and software interdisciplinary teams to understand the system/marketing requirements and to map them to software requirements and design.
  • Candidate should (over time) develop a deep understanding of how the system works and be able to provide software solutions for critical customer gaps or issues. Develop and evaluate concepts and designs for the next-generation systems by conducting trade-off studies, identifying risk items, and suggest mitigation plans.
  • Work in a geographically distributed team to develop and deliver software solutions.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where communication and collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team is a significant part of the job. That is, coding is not the only skill needed for this job. While documentation and other offline support will be available, interacting with stakeholders will remain an indispensable part of understanding what needs to be done, and validating the work that is done.
  • Mentoring junior team members.
  • Influential in architectural and technology decisions made by senior members of the team.

What we want to see

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Previous experience as a Software Engineer or Software Developer working on machine control (non-compute hardware), automation, or instrumentation.
  • Excellent software engineering skills, including deep conceptual and applied knowledge of OOP, design patterns, data structures, distributed systems, multi-threaded and multi-process programming.
  • Proficiency in writing, deploying, and maintaining production code in C++, C# or JAVA.
  • Asynch programming in Java, C++ or C#.
  • Familiarity with interface protocols for cross-language software such as CORBA, Apache Thrift, gRPC, or similar technologies.
  • Ability to take abstract problem statements and detail them out into concrete requirements and design through collaborative discussions.
  • Possess good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.

  • A passion and demonstrated track record of creating software that controls and manipulates real-life hardware.
  • Deep understanding of software engineering concepts (operating systems, programming languages, OOP, design patterns, etc.).
  • Ability to understand complex use cases and propose technology roadmaps aligned with evolutionary changes to existing software.
  • Responsible for work that you are not directly contributing to.
  • Trusted stakeholder to program, marketing, and senior engineering management.
  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's Level Degree and related work experience of 8 years; or Master's Level Degree and related work experience of 6 years.

The team:

Delivery Engineering team is part of eBay's Core Technology (CT) organization and is responsible for the AI-infused eBay Developer Platform used by our engineering teams to build and deliver software. The team is responsible for eBay's Continuous Delivery platform and various other AI-infused no-code/low-code platforms used on a daily basis by eBay’s engineers.

The role:

We are looking for a Developer Productivity Platform engineer who is passionate about building the next generation Continuous Delivery platform for eBay. You will collaborate to invent, design and implement scalable, efficient and reliable solutions on the platform side. Your work will help eBay's product teams test faster, more efficiently and release their changes to production faster and also help with a key company wide initiative called "The Velocity Initiative".

The ideal candidate will have a solid engineering proficiency, proven track record of solving critical engineering problems. The candidate will be expected to have strong communication skills and to be capable of cross-group collaborations.

Job Requirements:

  • BS/BA in Computer Science or related field plus 10 years work experience or MS with 8 years of relevant experience
  • Strong experience with JVM languages (Java, Kotlin)
  • Experience in building large, reliable, scalable distributed systems
  • Experience with building event-driven applications
  • Experience with designing and building RESTful APIs with Spring Boot
  • Experience with at least one scripting language
  • Prove experience in architecting backend systems
  • Deep understanding of design patterns, and experience working in a layered architecture
  • Knowledge of core CS concepts such as common data structures and algorithms
  • Experience with modern DevOps principles and continuous delivery
  • Experience and working knowledge with Kubernetes and Tekton is a plus
  • Experience working with LLMs and ML Models is a plus
  • Experience with building front-end applications using React or Angular is a plus
  • Knowledge of DORA metrics, Flow Framework and Developer Productivity platform building experience is a plus

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$149,200 - $234,850 Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
