Upstart Logo
Software Engineer, Home Lending
Upstart
Remote
$113,800 to $189,000 a year
May 2024

Job Description

About Upstart

Upstart is a leading AI lending marketplace partnering with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit. By leveraging Upstart's AI marketplace, Upstart-powered banks and credit unions can have higher approval rates and lower loss rates across races, ages, and genders, while simultaneously delivering the exceptional digital-first lending experience their customers demand. More than two-thirds of Upstart loans are approved instantly and are fully automated.

Upstart is a digital-first company, which means that most Upstarters live and work anywhere in the United States. However, we also have offices in San Mateo, California; Columbus, Ohio; and Austin, Texas.

Most Upstarters join us because they connect with our mission of enabling access to effortless credit based on true risk. If you are energized by the impact you can make at Upstart, we’d love to hear from you!

As a software engineer on the Home Lending team, you’ll help build and grow Upstart’s 2 newest products: HELOC and Mortgage.

The Team:

We’re a small team building our own business. Our first product, launched in summer ‘23, is a home equity line of credit (HELOC) for homeowners. Our next product is a home loan (mortgage) for homebuyers. Both of these are Upstart’s most complex products to date, and we need more talented, creative thinkers to be successful!

Why Mortgage? This industry is the largest category of consumer credit in the US, with over $2 trillion in originations last year. This is where Upstart can make its biggest impact.

Why us? The market has left behind millions of Americans with imperfect credit or difficult-to-document income. Serving these customers is Upstart’s bread and butter, and it’s core to our mission. Because we use machine learning to assess creditworthiness versus a fixed formula more than a decade old (FICO), we’re able to extend loans to prospective homeowners that our competitors just can’t. We’ve proven this model with personal loans and auto loans, and now we want to bring this access to where families feel it the most: where they live.

We want our team to reflect the people we’re serving. To serve customers at the fringes, we need people who think at the fringes—weird, quirky, out-of-the-box do-ers who reason from first principles and not from the status quo. We leave our ego at the door and crave being proven wrong. We're a high-empathy team, and we succeed as a team first, individuals second.

Role description:

As an engineer on one of Upstart’s newest teams, you’ll work closely with cross-functional partners, working across the whole stack. You're a self-starter that's able to leverage tools in your toolbelt to pave your own path forward to progress and deliver work with quality, testability, resiliency, and maintainability in mind. You may currently specialize on the frontend (React) or backend (Kotlin), but you're looking to get your hands into both areas of the stack. You're eager to learn and grow as an individual but also enjoy helping your team come along for the ride.

Travel Requirements - This team has regular onsite collaboration sessions. These occur roughly once per quarter (~3 days at a time) in one of our main offices (Columbus, OH or San Mateo, CA). If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.

How you’ll make an impact:

Beyond leveraging our existing tech (AWS, Kafka, Spring Boot, Next.js, Kubernetes, Kotlin, React), here’s how you’ll make an impact:

  • Proactively search out ways to make an impact beyond the Jira board
  • Turn feature-specific tasks into opportunities to up-level the team’s codebase and product
  • Know the product intimately enough to propose changes to requirements when we need to find a middle path
  • Propose and deliver new ideas that achieve meaningful improvements to our team’s metrics
  • Contribute in a meaningful way to quality improvements within our team

What we’re looking for:

  • Minimum requirements:
    • 1+ years professional experience in fullstack software
    • 1+ years proficiency in Kotlin, Java, or C#. (Our backend is in Kotlin, but Java and C# are similar enough that you can learn on the job.)
    • Some hands-on experience with a JavaScript framework like React
    • Some hands-on experience with SQL databases and domain modeling
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication. As an engineer, a big part of your job will be representing your projects in cross-functional conversations, and you’ll need to tailor your communication style to fit these different audiences’ needs.
    • Preference for face-time and synchronous collaboration. We’re a distributed team of remote workers (from coast to coast), and while we predominantly build asynchronously, we prefer facetime when collaborating in a tight feedback loop. You’ll need to be comfortable with a few hours of Zoom per day (e.g. mob programming) to excel in this role.
    • Comfortable challenging authority. We want engineers who can push back on their managers when they think we’re going down the wrong path. Related: you thrive in environments where you are expected to think like an owner and make decisions like one.

What you'll love:

  • Competitive Compensation (base + bonus & equity)
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage with Health Savings Account contributions from Upstart
  • 401(k) with 100% company match up to $4,500 and immediate vesting and after-tax savings
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP)
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Generous holiday, vacation, sick and safety leave
  • Supportive parental, family care, and military leave programs
  • Annual wellness, technology & ergonomic reimbursement programs
  • Social activities including team events and onsites, all-company updates, employee resource groups (ERGs), and other interest groups such as book clubs, fitness, investing, and volunteering
  • Catered lunches + snacks & drinks when working in offices

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k).

United States | Remote - Anticipated Base Salary Range $113,800—$189,000 USD

Upstart is a proud Equal Opportunity Employer. We are dedicated to ensuring that underrepresented classes receive better access to affordable credit, and are just as committed to embracing diversity and inclusion in our hiring practices. We celebrate all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, and know that we can only become better together.

Pre-Sales Field Engineer
DATAIKU
Remote
$175,000 to $200,000 a year
May 2024

Job Description

At Dataiku, we're not just adapting to the AI revolution, we're leading it. Since our beginning in Paris in 2013, we've been pioneering the future of AI with a platform that makes data actionable and accessible. With over 1,000 teammates across 25 countries and backed by a renowned set of investors, we're the architects of Everyday AI, enabling data experts and domain experts to work together to build AI into their daily operations, from advanced analytics to Generative AI.

Dataiku allows enterprises to create value with their data in a human-centered way while breaking down silos and encouraging collaboration. One of the most unique characteristics of our product, Data Science Studio (DSS), is the breadth of its scope and the fact that it caters both to technical and non-technical users. Through DSS, we aim to empower people through data and democratize data science.

Dataiku is looking for an experienced Architect to join its Field Engineering Team as a Pre-Sales Field Engineer. This position will support the deployment of Dataiku's Enterprise AI Platform to an ever growing customer base.

As a Pre-Sales Field Engineer, you'll work with customers at the Pre-Sales stage of their relationship with Dataiku - aiding in conversations with IT and Security teams, helping customers deploy evaluation software in their environments, determining target architectures for post-sale implementations, and more. Showing our prospects that the technical team at Dataiku can be the trusted technical advisor and subject matter expert is a core component of the role. You will help customers to design and validate their future Data Science and AI Enterprise Platforms, and set them up for success with Dataiku.

This role requires strong technical abilities, adaptability, inventiveness, and strong communication skills. Sometimes you will work with clients on traditional big data technologies such as SQL data warehouses and on-premise Hadoop data lakes, while at other times you will be helping them to discover and implement the most cutting edge tools; cutting-edge infrastructure deployment stacks, cloud-based elastic compute engines like Spark on Kubernetes, and deep learning on GPUs. If you are interested in staying at the bleeding edge of big data and AI while maintaining a strong working knowledge of existing enterprise systems, this will be a great fit for you.

In this role you'll help the team:

  • Evangelize the challenges of building Enterprise Data Science Platforms to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Understand customer requirements in terms of scalability, availability and security and provide architecture recommendations
  • Deploy Dataiku DSS in a large variety of evaluation technical environments (on prem/cloud, kubernetes, spark, hadoop …)
  • Design and build reference architectures, decks, scripts and diagrams to make the deployment and maintenance of Dataiku DSS smooth and easy
  • Coordinate with Revenue and Customer teams to deliver a consistent experience and message to our customers
  • Train our clients and partners in the art and science of administering a bleeding-edge Elastic AI platform
  • Drive technical success by being a trusted advisor to our prospects and our internal account teams to provide the best recommendations and advance customer accounts

You might be a good fit for the role if you have:

  • Strong Linux system administration experience.
  • Hands-on experience with the Kubernetes ecosystem for setup, administration, troubleshooting and tuning.
  • Experience with cloud based services like AWS, GCP , and Azure.
  • Grit when faced with technical issues. You don't rest until you understand why it does not work.
  • Comfort and confidence in client-facing interactions.
  • Hands-on experience with the Hadoop and/or Spark ecosystem for setup, administration, troubleshooting and tuning.
  • Some experience with Python.
  • Familiarity with Ansible or other application deployment tools (Terraform, CloudFormation, etc).
  • Ability to overcome security and architecture roadblocks coming from prospect IT through a deep knowledge of Dataiku and the surrounding environment.
  • Must be bilingual in Spanish.

Bonus point for any of these:

  • Experience with authentication and authorization systems like LDAP, Kerberos, AD, and IAM
  • Experience debugging networking issues such as DNS resolutions, proxy settings, and security groups
  • Some knowledge in data science and/or machine learning
  • Some knowledge of Java
