Role Description

FICC Technology Team is seeking a strong Java low latency developer to build Next Generation Market Data Plant which will ingest, collect and disseminate market data and perform order execution with the lowest possible latency. In addition, market data will be distributed internal applications via publish/subscribe and other well-known industry mechanisms.

Role Objectives

  • Develop efficient and resilient market data infrastructure which will be used for low-latency algorithmic trading, as well as central source for real time and historical market data

  • Integration of the FPGA-based vendor API with internal applications

  • Development and support of Market Data Distribution framework

  • Automate production deployment including setting up standard unit and integration tests, usage of CI/CD pipeline, clear separation of development, QA and Production environments.

    Qualifications and Skills

  • Extensive Java core server experience

  • 2-5 years of low Java low latency experience

  • Strong knowledge of fundamental Computer Science Data Structures program-solving skills

  • Good understanding of low latency design and implementation

  • Extensive experience with Java memory model and concurrency

  • Good understanding of Java techniques aimed at achieving low latency

  • Substantial experience with Java NIO, particularly network and Direct Buffer API

Platform persistence group provides storage API for higher layer applications. Depending on the nature of the data, the storage systems include relational database, non-relational database such as columnar database, time series database, or message queue system. Our largest customers are always pushing the limits of the backend storage in terms of size of the data, speed of IO, as well as number of concurrent transactions. Performance, reliability, and scalability is always at the core of our work.

As a Senior Data Platform Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to become a key member of the Platform Persistence group. Team members will be mentored in the necessary skills to become successful contributors to the team.

What you'll do and need to know:

  • You'll create the features exposing and leveraging capabilities on our underlying database engines.
  • Experience in Core Java development, object-oriented and modularized software.
  • Provide platform API to manage large data volume and record life cycles while keeping the database healthy and performing.

The Data Streaming group has teams that provide streaming API for higher-layer applications and/or work to scale our application platforms. Depending on the nature of the data, the storage systems include data in motion, such as time-series databases or message bus systems. Our largest customers are constantly pushing the limits of the backend storage in terms of size of the data, speed of IO, and the number of concurrent transactions. What you get to do in this role:

  • Design and build highly innovative interactive high performant solutions with scalability and quality.
  • Design software that is simple to use to allow customers to extend and customize the functionality to meet their specific needs.
  • Build high-quality, clean, scalable, and reusable code by enforcing best practices around software engineering architecture and processes (Code Reviews, Unit testing, etc.)
  • Design and develop tools, libraries, and frameworks with long term platform mindset thinking for high modularity, extensibility, configurability, and maintainability.
  • Lead and coordinate work cross functionally to improve architecture, developing process and mentoring junior members in the team.
  • Collaborate with Sr Staff and/or Tech Leads along with the product owners to understand detailed requirements and own your code from design, implementation, test automation and delivery of high-quality product to our users.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of new products and features while also enhancing the existing product suite.
  • Manage projects with material technical risk at a team level.
  • Be a mentor for colleagues and help promote knowledge-sharing.

To be successful in the role:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with fundamentals in distributed systems design and development
  • Strong fluency with Java programming as well as good understanding of Java memory model and garbage collection
  • Experience with JVM performance tuning and optimization as well as experience in diagnosing performance bottlenecks.
  • Advanced working knowledge of concurrency, sockets, networking, operating systems, memory management, runtimes, portability, etc
  • Has the experience and ability to diagnose issues and troubleshoot.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with streaming systems (Kafka, Pulsar, etc.)
  • Experience working with Kafka.
  • Experience working in a DevOps environment.
  • Experience with relational databases: Oracle, MySQL, MariaDB, MS SQLServer

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience with Java or a similar OO language
  • Experience building and operating large-scale systems.
  • Experience with data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, design patterns, and performance/scale considerations

For positions in the Bay Area, we offer a base pay of $165,800 - $290,200, plus equity (when applicable), variable/incentive compensation and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the base pay shown is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location. We also offer health plans, including flexible spending accounts, a 401(k) Plan with company match, ESPP, matching donations, a flexible time away plan and family leave programs (subject to eligibility requirements). Compensation is based on the geographic location in which the role is located, and is subject to change based on work location.

Job Description Team:

As a Senior Staff Data Platform Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to become a key member of the Data Scale team in the Platform Persistence group.

  • Research, design and implement strategies to evaluate and improve performance, scalability and reliability of ServiceNow platform/applications.
  • Analyse and solve complex performance issues. Identify and document inefficient architecture/workflows/processes that fail to meet business requirements, recommend improvement

  • Collaborate with architects, developers and leaders from engineering, product management and customer facing teams to build scalable products/solutions, proactively engage in root cause analysis and mitigation of customers’ performance escalations
  • Provide assessments of performance and scale for products/solutions to the leadership with deep-dive analysis, trends over time and relevant KPIs that could drive key decisions
  • Facilitate capacity planning, sizing, demand forecasting, software performance analysis and system tuning
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert (SME) on performance/scale. Provide leadership and mentorship to performance engineers, developers, product managers on performance engineering process, frameworks and best practices. Enable knowledge sharing, cross-collaboration, standardization and innovation
  • Benchmark key business flows against production scale infrastructures, data volume and concurrency to simulate large customers
  • Review customer usage patterns, customer logged performance defects and enhance performance test coverage based on gaps identified
  • Log and track performance bugs, collect and report performance metrics
  • Work within agile software development process, certify products for release readiness in terms of performance, scalability and reliability
  • Stay up-to-date with latest developments in the industry on performance engineering practices and apply them in performance initiatives at ServiceNow. Learn quickly when facing new situations, apply new concepts and principles to address problems

Qualifications Qualifications:

To be successful in this role you have:

/ MS / PhD. in computer science (or equivalent) with around 12+ years of experience in performance engineering and/or software development. Prior experience as a performance architect is highly desirable. Knowledge of ServiceNow platform is a huge plus

  • Strong hands-on skills on DB performance analysis, SQL tuning, Knowledge on distributed database architecture, replication, failover and their impacts on performance. Ability to debug/resolve performance issues with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL are desirable
  • Domain knowledge and hands-on skills with cloud infrastructures such as AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Kafka. Ability to identify and resolve their performance bottlenecks
  • Understand the impact of locking, caching, replication, load balancing etc on software performance
  • Proven skills in industry standard performance test frameworks such as JMeter, WPT
  • Experience in performance monitoring and reporting frameworks such as Splunk, Grafana, InfluxDB, Prometheus, ELK/Kibana
  • Ability to develop performance tools/utilities using programming languages such as Java, Java-Script, Python, Shell scripts. Strong skills on Linux commands and utilities
  • Ability to carry out root cause analysis of complex performance issues, analyse results and recommend solutions
  • Experience with defining, documenting and reviewing technical architecture for highly scalable products
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, brings clarity to ambiguous situations, facilitates and arbitrates technical discussions and has the ability to make challenging calls or recommendations

Job Description Team:

As a Staff Data Platform Software Engineer, you will have the opportunity to become a key member of the Cloud Platform Persistence group. The platform persistence group has teams that provide storage API for higher layer applications, build capabilities and/or work to scale our application platforms.

Our largest customers are always pushing the limits of the backend storage in terms of size of the data, speed of IO, as well as number of concurrent transactions. Performance, reliability, and scalability is always at the core of our work.

What you’ll do and need to know:

  • You will work toward managing explosive data growth and ensure our systems remain available and highly responsive.
  • Work with relational database developing on, troubleshooting, and optimizing performance.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and engineers in driving the performance and operational features to completion.
  • Demonstrated successful completion of complex projects.
  • Experience in Core Java development, Object oriented and modularized software.
  • Experience in handling large volumes of data on relational database.

To be successful:

  • Experience with troubleshooting difficult production issues e.g., memory leaks, concurrency issues, locking issues, network problems, intermittent failures etc. across the stack.
  • Experience navigating legacy code.
  • Having aptitude for learning new technologies quickly.
  • Capability to complete projects on time

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with Unix shell.
  • Good understanding of database technologies and internals
  • Knowledge of DevOps environment.
  • Experience with Ruby or Go.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of software development experience
  • Experience with core Java development.
  • Good working experience with backend platform development
  • Knowledge and/or experience with relational databases: PostgreSQL, MariaDB, Oracle, MySQL

For positions in California (outside of the Bay Area), we offer a base pay of $149,200 - $261,200, plus equity (when applicable), variable/incentive compensation and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the base pay shown is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location. We also offer health plans, including flexible spending accounts, a 401(k) Plan with company match, ESPP, matching donations, a flexible time away plan and family leave programs (subject to eligibility requirements). Compensation is based on the geographic location in which the role is located, and is subject to change based on work location. For individuals who will be working in the Bay Area, there is a pay enhancement for positions located in that geographical area; please contact your recruiter for additional information.
