Job Description

The Senior Web and Mobile Software Engineer is responsible for native development in iOS, Android, and web platforms. This position delivers outstanding results by writing well-factored cohesive code with good encapsulation and low coupling, in collaboration with business stakeholders and various members of the Technology organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build full-stack, user focused web and mobile software solutions within best practices for maintainable, extensible code, with an emphasis on maintainability, and modern well architected frameworks.
  • Lead development with a strong focus in front-end consumer facing products with modular design patterns.
  • Experience working in teams jointly developing functionality across web and mobile applications, ensuring a seamless user experience across all platforms.
  • Lead debugging efforts of incidents and bugs introduced to user facing products, providing resolutions expediently to ensure quality solutions are delivered to our consumers.
  • Elicit requirements via stakeholder collaboration, as well as reverse-engineered from legacy code.
  • Responsible for driving initiatives in Continuous Integration/Test/Delivery.
  • Motivate, coach, and mentor team members on best practices and adherence to policy, including acting as a point of escalation for more junior members.
  • Remain current with emerging technologies, influencing the future Coinstar landscape.
  • Continuously learn and enhance technical and non-technical skills through peer and professional training programs.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
  • 8+ years hands-on experience building commercial software systems.
  • Multiple years of experience designing, developing, and delivering:
    • Mobile software solutions for iOS devices developed with Swift 5+, RxSwift, Swift Package Manager, SwiftUI with a focus on modular code, designing software for reusability while prioritizing native iOS components (Ex: sharing common code for authentication)
    • Mobile software solutions for Android devices developed with Kotlin 1.9+/Java, Jetpack Compose, JUnit, Android Studio, and MVVM.
    • Frontend web facing solutions utilizing TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS backed by .NET Core C# Web APIs utilizing EntityFramework and microservice architecture patterns.
    • Container orchestration services including Kubernetes, Docker, and a variety of Azure tools and services.
    • Customer facing solutions with a focus on user experience and accessible design.
  • Experience piloting best practices in software architecture with a focus on performance and event-driven code bases.
  • Experience integrating with and maintaining connections with third-party libraries, SDKs, Webhooks, and APIs.
  • Experience using modern identity management frameworks and technologies.
  • Experience integrating with cloud-based solutions utilizing Azure (Key Vault, ADF Pipelines, Azure Functions and Logic Apps)
  • Experience with code harnesses, Agile development, Dev/Ops methodologies, and industry standard CI/CD tools.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of SDLC methodologies with a focus in Agile and Scrum.
  • Experience deploying to App Store and Google Play Store.
  • Experience writing and running test suites with CI/CD, including test automation, unit test level TDD, and SAST/DAST.
  • Experience building financial solutions such as trading platforms, digital wallets, and payment solutions is a plus.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated industry, managing the secure transit and storage of sensitive data.
  • Experience using continuous integration tool stacks such as TeamCity, Azure DevOps, Terraform, etc
  • Familiarity with UI test frameworks such as WebDriver, Appium, Karma, Selenium, Mocha, etc

Pay and Benefits

The typical starting salary range for this position is $116,000 - $160,000. For Washington State or jurisdictions that require the publication of the entire pay scale or salary range information, the full range is between 115,121 and 194,856. Coinstar utilizes geographically based pay ranges, within the United States, which allows us to pay competitively and consistently based on location. Within the range for the applicable geographic area, individual pay is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share the salary range specific to your location. Short-Term and Long-Term bonus incentives are a part of the total compensation package and are based on Company and Individual performance.

About the team

The Live DevOps team is responsible for the CDN infrastructure for the WBD brands like CNN, TBS, TNT, Bleacher Report and NCAA, and MAX. This includes managing the live streamingand on demand video origins, integrating and maintaining our video and site infrastructure acrossmultiple CDN partners and supporting our brands as we bring best in class experiences directly to our consumers. Additionally, we also manage the infrastructure for the live channels that feed our direct-to-consumer platforms for both linear and event-based workflows. We leverage automation where possible and collaborate with cross-functional teams to innovate across your systems.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with development teams and technical teams to provide resilient solutions to achieve business goals. Solutions can consist of software and services, commercial software, services and systems as well as open source software.
  • Solutions Consultation: collaborate with business unit and third-party service provides for new products or product enhancements that may alter performance and availability of products, services or infrastructure components
  • Configuration Management: author, deploy, and maintain system, web site and application configuration management code and configuration
  • Perform platform configuration, capacity planning, monitoring, alert configuration and Tier 2 incident response.
  • Plan and execute the integration of internet-based products and services in an efficient, secure, scalable, reliable and cost-effective manner.
  • Incident Response: Execute day to day maintenance tasks including problem determination and resolution, as well as root-cause analysis and responsibility responding to live site issues
  • Automation/Tooling: author, maintain and document custom tools and programs that reduce the number of manual processes necessary for daily operational support
  • Product Testing: provides support for integration testing, system testing, and load/performance testing prior to final release of new and upgraded products and services
  • Documentation: provide and maintain documentation of systems architecture, troubleshooting and support guidelines, system metrics, project information and plans
  • Operational system support of various internet properties including streaming video and site deployment

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience providing operational support of internet delivered products
  • Content Delivery Network (CDN) platform experience with one or several of these vendors: Akamai, CloudFront, Fastly, Edgio, Lumen, or Google Media CDN
  • Advanced knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS and HTTP
  • Intermediate skills in a shell programming language such as: bsh, ksh, zsh, powershell, etc.
  • Intermediate skills in one or more common, cross-platform programming languages such as: Python, Ruby, Perl, Java, Go, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of web application content and its effects on end-user experience: HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Flash, etc.
  • Experience troubleshooting web application issues using commonly available tools such as: FireBug, Charles Proxy, Chrome Developer Tools, curl, etc.
  • Intermediate skills managing one or more application layer load balancing and caching solutions such as: F5 Big-IP, NetScaler, HAProxy, Varnish, Apache Traffic Server, Memcached, etc.
  • Experience configuring, deploying and supporting one or more web server platforms such as: Apache Tomcat, Oracle GlassFish, Apache Geronimo, Red Hat JBoss, nginx, Apache HTTPD Server, IBM WebSphere Application Server, etc.
  • Experience configuring, deploying, monitoring, tuning and supporting Java web applications
  • Proficient in use of one or more popular centralized or distributed (preferred) source control tools and services such as: Git, Github, Bitbucket, SVN, CVS, etc. and Terraform

What you'll be doing:

  • Build platforms, services, or tools that enable engineers to deliver operationally mature services in production
  • Help teams with automating tedious tasks and enable them to quickly launch new services and execute optimally
  • Work with service owners to have a proactive approach to designing tests, observing results and creating fixes for complex failure scenarios.
  • Help service owners identify and instrument Service Level Objectives and design alerts that follow best practices
  • Facilitate blameless postmortems and drive effective action items

What you must have:(These are must-haves; skills that someone must have entering the role on day 1 and required for hiring)

  • Senior level experience as an Systems Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, or Production Engineer
  • Significant Experience with Cloud Platforms such as Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services
  • Fluent with one or more programming languages such as Go, Python or Java
  • Ability to debug and optimize code
  • Experience with Incident Management platforms like Firehydrant
  • Ability to coordinate and manage incident response
  • Skills in defining and instrumenting SLOs and SLIs using query languages and observability tooling
  • Automate tasks and processes with open source tools
  • Streaming and Database technologies such as Postgres, Kafka, Cassandra, ElasticSearch, etc.

Bonus points!

  • Previous experience as an SRE or System Engineer
  • Previous Experience with Firehydrant
  • Previous experience with Backstage or another Developer Experience tool
  • Familiarity with Chef, Puppet, Ansible or other Configuration Management Tooling

The salary range for this position is $122,400 - $180,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, long-term incentives, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.

What you get to do in this role:

  • Design and deploy networks based on business and technical requirements.
  • Partner with project and program managers to meet overall timelines and resolution of issues.
  • Operate and troubleshoot networks to identify and resolve issues quickly.
  • Take a lead role in the engagement and mitigation of outage causing events or issues.
  • Validate problem descriptions and perform detailed problem diagnosis; track and update problems in trouble-ticketing system.
  • Perform non-critical investigations into functionality that is not working as desired.
  • Engage deeply in the sustainment function to proactively analyze network parameters such as capacity and availability to ensure issues are fixed before they cause an outage.
  • Review, consult and prepare for planned change introduction to production environment.
  • Participate in rotating “on call” schedule with other members of the team including weekends.
  • Partner with teams to plan and execute software code upgrades and device maintenance.
  • Partner with the Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team to provide mentorship and input on operational process improvements.
  • Provide feedback to infrastructure architects on design issues or improvements and input into the design process for new initiatives.

Sample first 6-month deliverables

  • Quickly integrate into the environment and gain a solid understanding of network architecture, organization, and process/procedures.
  • Deploy capacity into a datacenter based on demand.
  • Participate in incident bridges and serve as the networking engineering resource to troubleshoot and mitigate outages.
  • Take ownership of a minimum of two datacenters perform all sustainment engineering functions.
  • Partner with the SRE team to identify and solve one network process issue.

Qualifications To be successful in this role you have:

  • The candidate should have a solid foundation in networking including routing, switching, security and load balancing.
  • 2+ years of experience with cloud computing technologies (e.g. Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, etc.) across Windows and/or Linux
  • Azure Core Platform: Compute, Storage, Networking.
  • Azure Web Apps: developing, deploying, debugging and supporting web applications using .NET, Java, PHP, Python, Node.js etc. on Windows or Linux.
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD): using DevOps, Bit Bucket, GitHub.
  • Experience in one or more automation languages (PowerShell, shell scripts, Perl, Python, Ansible, Terraform) desired.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in working on Internet and data center networks.
  • Possess a solid understanding of and have experience with most of the following network technologies: BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, HSRP/VRRP, IPSEC, SNMP.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with TCP/IP protocols including capturing and analyzing traffic with Wireshark and/or other tools.
  • Familiarity with Cisco IOS and JunOS operating systems required.
  • F5 and Cisco ASA knowledge and experience strongly desired.
  • Experience with network monitoring applications such as EMC Watch4Net, Cacti, Splunk is a plus.
  • Ability to partner with peers who are globally distributed is a key part of this role.

For positions in California (outside of the Bay Area), we offer a base pay of $109,400 - $185,900, plus equity (when applicable), variable/incentive compensation and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the base pay shown is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies and work location. We also offer health plans, including flexible spending accounts, a 401(k) Plan with company match, ESPP, matching donations, a flexible time away plan and family leave programs (subject to eligibility requirements). Compensation is based on the geographic location in which the role is located, and is subject to change based on work location.
