The Role:

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Engineering Lead to join General Motors' Enterprise Innovation Team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in the development and architecture of cutting-edge automotive technology. As a player coach, y ou will lead a small team of engineers and DevOps professionals, ensuring that projects are executed efficiently, effectively, and in alignment with our vision for the future of mobility. We are hiring senior software engineer for our Vehicle update Service (VUS) core backend team. The VUS team is responsible for the Over The Air (OTA) Software delivery platform for General Motors. Our vision is to build a unified channel that ensures every GM customer knows their vehicle is always up to date and improve without needlessly interrupting their lives.

The VUS Core Team is responsible for the Firmware OTA (FOTA) backend system, which orchestrates software update campaign execution, and delivery of FOTA updates to GM vehicles. The team follows DevOps principles, owning end to end responsibility of multiple critical microservices powering various OTA workflows, including software package building, and all types of vehicle interactions. We design and implement business features, and are responsible for our software’s quality, deployment, production monitoring and support.

Our platform is a highly complex collection of microservices built based on REST & Event Driven Architecture following Domain Driven Design principles. We integrate with multiple vehicle clients, BIGDATA platforms, and multiple GM internal systems which are crucial OTA vehicle updates. Our main objective of the platform is to deliver software updates to GM vehicles at scale (1M backend transactions per day) and increase the success rate of vehicle software updates, thereby reducing customer dealer visits and continuously enhance GM vehicles in all aspects.

As part of this role, you will be doing the following activities.

  • Ensure high performance, scalability, and reliability of the distributed backend platform responsible for executing and delivering software updates to vehicles.
  • Trusted senior software developer in the team with expertise in JAVA / Spring Boot microservices, developing & designing components that execute at the expected performance levels, monitoring the backend components for performance bottlenecks, debug / triage issues in the distributed environment and implement the solutions.
  • Understand the OTA business flows and the complex microservices interactions via event driven architecture within the platform and suggest performance tuning considerations right from design.
  • Understand and analyze the transactional and reporting data that’s replicated into BIGDATA platform, implement complex queries required for throughput analysis on the data, come up with recovery actions as needed.
  • Design and execute load test scenarios and work with cross functional teams for capacity planning to handle peak loads.
  • Own & control the performance environment, deploying the changes into the environment for every upgrade made in the platform.
  • Lead complex triage and debug of system-level issues, building and executing the tools and tests required for running our production systems at scale. Leverage and improve CI / CD pipelines, track key metrics and tune the system to achieve performance.
  • Understand the observability needs for the platform, come up with proposals to enhance the tracing, logging and monitoring of microservices, implement them in different services as needed and guide other team members to enhance observability.
  • Implement operational visualization techniques to create interactive dashboards and visualizations in both Load test and PROD environments that provide insights into system performance and behavior.
  • Work closely with different cross functional teams, architects, operational stakeholders and enterprise tools team to implement best practices, resiliency, build a highly scalable and efficient OTA platform.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Systems Reliability Engineering (SRE), or a similar role, preferably in a cloud-native environment.
  • Strong understanding of microservices and event driven architecture using KAFKA and performance optimization techniques.
  • Proficiency in performance testing tools and methodologies, such as JMeter, Gatling, etc.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using languages like Python, Bash, Shell or similar.

The Role

GM is developing the next generation of embedded platform software to deliver state of the art Infotainment features on the Ultifi platform. We are looking for energetic engineers with experience in Android, QNX, and Linux to help us deliver high quality software for future automotive systems. As a Vehicle SW Quality Automation Developer at GM, you will develop automation solutions that will enable test automation of software at a vehicle level. This will include developing automation solutions and enablers that will encompass all systems and subsystems within the vehicle.

This exciting position is a located in central hub for developing automation enablers that will transform how GM develops and tests the software within the vehicle. The Vehicle SW Quality Automation developer will take input from Test Architects and bring their vision of how automation testing of software is done at a vehicle level to life. What you'll be doing:

  • Build platforms, services, or tools that enable engineers to deliver operationally mature services in production
  • Help teams with automating tedious tasks and enable them to quickly launch new services and execute optimally
  • Work with service owners to have a proactive approach to designing tests, observing results and creating fixes for complex failure scenarios.
  • Help service owners identify and instrument Service Level Objectives and design alerts that follow best practices
  • Facilitate blameless postmortems and drive effective action items

What you must have:(These are must-haves; skills that someone must have entering the role on day 1 and required for hiring)

  • Senior level experience as an Systems Engineer, Site Reliability Engineer, or Production Engineer
  • Significant Experience with Cloud Platforms such as Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services
  • Fluent with one or more programming languages such as Go, Python or Java
  • Ability to debug and optimize code
  • Experience with Incident Management platforms like Firehydrant

As an engineer on this team, you will be responsible for building and supporting a petabyte-scale data platform in the cloud and providing powerful foundations for Cruise's ML Data Platform tools, frameworks, and services. Responsibilities include ensuring scalable, transparent, and reliable data ingestion and management; development of fast, robust, and spike-resistant data consumption, data mining, and processing tools for the entire company; and development of orchestration for large-scale post-processing, and computational pipelines.

  • Lead us in the development, optimization and productionization of the next generation data processing platform using Beam and Spark in the cloud.
  • Build self-serve capabilities to help customers to adopt the next generation data processing platform
  • Use the latest cloud technologies to own, design, implement, and test scalable distributed data systems in the cloud. Champion engineering excellence by continuously improving systems and processes
  • Own technical projects from start to finish, contribute to the team's product roadmap, and be responsible for major technical decisions and tradeoffs. Effectively participate in team's planning, code reviews and design discussions

  • Experience building full ML model lifecycle solutions - from feature engineering to training, validation, deployment and monitoring.
